Established in 1856, and under the care of the Moggill Historical Society, Moggill Cemetery encompasses 13 acres of relatively undisturbed bushland. Moggill 4070 is a community suburb, about 19 kilometres (12 miles) from Brisbane CBD. The Moggill Cemetery comprises a mixture of small-lot and acreage residential homes along with a small number of remaining farms. Moggill is located in the Parish of Moggill within the County of Stanley, Queensland. The Moggill Cemetery is actually located in the (now named) suburb of Bellbowrie, but like many historical sites, the original area often remains the name of the site. Moggill is said to be the Turrbal Aboriginal word for Water Lizard in the Jagara language, although there are other theories as to the origins of the name Moggill... Another theory is that an ex-convict called Mog lived in a shack in the vicinity, the place gaining the name Mog's Hill.
