AMA’s Western Australia President Dr Andrew Miller says Australians are “paying the price” for the failure of state and federal governments to do the “homework” as large swathes of the nation battle to contain COVID-19. Much of New South Wales, Queensland, WA and the Northern Territory have been thrust into lockdown as a result of a Delta variant outbreak which originated from a Bondi limousine driver. Dr Miller said governments around the country tried to “cruise through the pandemic”, accusing authorities of not doing the “relatively simply things”. “We needed to get to lockdown at this point because we haven’t fully respected the airborne spread, particularly of the delta variant of the virus and we haven’t yet prepared our community,” he told Sky News. “We’re still not talking about basic things … none of that messaging is coming out and we could be doing all of those relatively simple things … to prevent the kind of spread that is going to send us straight back into lockdown every time because we don’t have any other trick in our book at the moment. “Australia will continue to pay the price of trying to cruise through the pandemic thinking we can get by on border closures and lockdowns when we really need to get the rest of our homework done.”
